Pollença clears 1.5 tonnes of waste and three boats

Pollença on Mallorca has had 1.5 tonnes of rubbish cleared from its coast, while three abandoned boats have been taken from the harbour. PortsIB removed one sunken vessel and two inflatable boats from the harbour’s boat jetty on 6 August. The coastal cleaning service counted the waste collected in the area up to 19 August.

Most of the waste was vegetation

Vegetation made up 58.1 per cent of the material collected. Wood accounted for 25.8 per cent, plastic for 14.9 per cent and other waste for 1.2 per cent.

PortsIB said removing the boats was intended to keep harbour facilities in good condition and prevent possible safety or environmental problems.

230 checks along the north coast

The coastal surveillance service carried out 12 inspection days and 230 checks this season at sites across northern Mallorca, including Pollença Bay, Formentor and es Barcarès. Its work covered charter activity, anchoring, Posidonia protection and the Formentor buoy field.

Four charter operations checked seven boats or activities and resulted in five reports. Inspectors also carried out five Posidonia control days, making 79 checks and issuing two reports for anchoring on Posidonia. Separate anchoring checks ran for six days and totalled 154 inspections.

At Formentor, the PortsIB-managed buoy field was checked over two days, with a support operation during installation. Officials recorded 68 checks and issued five penalty notices.

PortsIB is now preparing a proposal for the Ministry to extend zone 2 at the ports of Pollença, Sóller and Colònia de Sant Jordi, with the schemes to go to tender together. In Pollença, the plan includes a regulated buoy field between the Gola and the air base to organise anchoring and help protect the coast.
