Menorca party calls minister over Posidonia anchoring

Més per Menorca is demanding answers from Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment Minister Joan Simonet after reports of mass anchoring on Posidonia near Illa de l'Aire, off Menorca. On 26 August, the party asked the Parliament for Simonet to appear and explain what it calls the Government's failure to protect the island's natural areas.

The party says unauthorised private activities have also been reported on Illa de l'Aire and in the Mongofre dunes, within the s'Albufera des Grau Natural Park. Illa de l'Aire is protected as a Natural Reserve.

Més per Menorca spokesperson Josep Castells said the request followed a series of similar incidents over the summer. The party wants the Government to release all available information, explain how the administration responded in each case and set out how it intends to repair any possible environmental damage.

It says present monitoring and control arrangements in Menorca's protected areas are not enough. Més per Menorca is calling for more environmental agents and surveillance staff, as well as a review of signs and information about bans and access restrictions.
