On the island of Ibiza, parish choirs open a series of events for 20 priests murdered during the Civil War with a new hymn at Eivissa Cathedral on Saturday at 20.00. The events lead to the first beatification held in the Balearic Islands on 17 October, according to the Diocese of Eivissa.

A hymn, a film and an exhibition

Musician and teacher Jordi Martí composed the hymn, which the diocese’s parish choirs will perform together. The cathedral will then screen a documentary about the priests’ lives and deaths. Afterwards, an exhibition of images and objects linked to their lives opens at the Pabordía exhibition hall.

The ceremony and what follows

On Friday 16 October, Bishop Vicent Ribas will lead prayers for the dead at the places where the priests were killed. The beatification follows at Eivissa Cathedral at 11.00 on Saturday 17 October. Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, will preside on behalf of Pope Leo XIV.

The cathedral will hold a thanksgiving Mass at 11.00 on Sunday 18 October. More thanksgiving Masses are planned in every parish on 24 and 25 October. On 6 November, the parishes will mark the newly beatified priests’ liturgical feast day for the first time.
