Two officers convicted in court are due to be honoured in Palma, Mallorca: the PSOE says it will skip Friday afternoon’s local police celebration in Plaza Major. The event is the Diada de la Policía Local, or local police day. The party announced its decision on 15 October after learning of the city government’s plan.

The PSOE says honouring the officers conflicts with the standards expected of public servants. It accuses the medals committee of letting party interests and personal commitments influence its decision. The party also points to rules that call on councils to withdraw or cancel honours already awarded to police officers convicted of a crime or serious offence.

The boycott does not extend to the other recipients. The PSOE congratulated them, saying their work in the local force or alongside the police deserves recognition.
