Palma gives 80 public homes a €1.2m overhaul

Eighty homes across Palma will benefit as the city spends €1.2 million repairing shared areas in nine public housing buildings. The buildings stand in Sa Gerreria, Sa Calatrava, Es Jonquet and Puig de Sant Pere. Palma City Council approved the 18-month project on Wednesday, 2 September 2026.

Each neighbourhood has its own budget line, said deputy council spokesman Llorenç Bauzá. A further €600,000 is planned in future municipal budgets to continue improving the buildings’ shared spaces.

Establiments quarries and a new municipal building

Palma also plans to bring the Sa Garrigueta Rassa and Can Rosselló quarries in Establiments, Mallorca, into municipal ownership. The council will first assess the value of the quarries and the rights involved, separately and together, before adding them to the city’s assets.

It will meet the owners to complete the deal and has not ruled out compulsory purchase if necessary. The land is intended to expand green areas and the planned metropolitan forest.

In Establiments, work will also start on turning the former library into a new Casa de la Vila, or municipal building. Around €329,000 has been assigned for structural, foundation and floor works, plus energy-efficiency improvements, so it can host public, cultural, educational and leisure services and activities.

€2.6m for Bellver access and forest protection

The road and paths leading to Castell de Bellver in Palma will be upgraded in a €2.6 million project. Contractor Hermanos Parrot has been awarded the work, which is due to take 12 months.

Plans include a new hydrant network, fresh surfacing on the main access road and improved paths around the forest. Palma will also add fire-prevention measures, restore and reforest eroded areas, remove invasive species and create or adapt accessible pedestrian routes.

The council has also approved nearly €256,000 to restore the tower roofs at Mercat de l’Olivar, with work scheduled to take six months. More than €160,000 will go towards enlarging the children’s play area in La Femu park, adding new equipment, picnic tables, benches and accessible drinking-water fountains.
