Mallorca and the rest of the Balearic Islands see public schools lose 1,234 pupils in the 2025-2026 school year, while private schools gain 945. The region has 289 fewer pupils overall — its first fall since 2016. The University of the Balearic Islands presented the figures in its education yearbook in Palma on Thursday, 22 October.

Public schools still teach most pupils

Across the islands, 197,910 children and teenagers are enrolled from nursery school through to upper secondary school and vocational training. Public schools teach 126,258 of them, compared with 71,652 in private schools.

Teacher numbers move the other way. They rise by 566 from the previous school year to 22,582.

More pupils repeat a year

In the second year of primary school, the share of pupils repeating a year rises from 2.3% to 3.3%. It also rises in the fourth and sixth years. Yearbook director Joan Amer says repeating a year goes against international experts’ recommendations and that the increase needs watching.

The latest figures for pupils completing compulsory secondary school offer a contrast: 88.1% graduated in 2024-2025, up from 87.6% the year before. Foreign pupils account for 19.3% of enrolments, 0.4 percentage points more than the previous year and 5.8 points above the national average.
