Mallorca rain alert: phone warning, classes off Monday

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Parts of Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, face up to 90 litres of rain per square metre in an hour: phones receive an emergency warning, and Monday’s classes are cancelled over the flood risk. On 18 October 2026, Civil Protection sends the warning, known as an ES-Alert, as the weather system Adam approaches. Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) puts southern Mallorca, the island’s interior and Llevant under its highest, red warning.

Where the rain warning applies

Aemet forecasts up to 90 litres per square metre in an hour in the red-warning areas. The rest of Mallorca has an orange warning, with up to 40 litres per square metre in an hour forecast.

Civil Protection urges people to avoid journeys and outdoor activities. It tells them to stay away from streams, flood-prone areas and basements, and to go to an upper floor if they are at home.

Monday classes cancelled on three islands

The Balearic government has cancelled Monday’s classes on Mallorca, Eivissa and Formentera because of the weather and flood risk. The University of the Balearic Islands is also suspending activity at its sites on those three islands.

Eivissa and Formentera have orange weather warnings for rain of up to 160 litres per square metre in an hour. Thunderstorms, waves of up to three metres and wind gusts of 50 to 60 km/h are also forecast. The Balearic emergency directorate has declared a red alert for rain and storms on both islands and says people should call 112 in an emergency.

Menorca has a yellow warning for storms and rain of up to 20 litres per square metre in an hour. Classes there are expected to go ahead as normal.
