Yellow rain warning for Mallorca and the Balearic Islands
A yellow rain warning is in force on Friday, 21 August, for Mallorca, Balearic Islands, and the rest of the archipelago. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) says rainfall could reach 20 litres per square metre in an hour.
The alert began at 08.00 in southern Mallorca and starts at 10.00 on the other islands. It is due to remain in place until 17.59.
During heavy rain or thunderstorms, doors and windows should be secured to limit water entering homes, while outdoor items that could be swept away should be brought inside. People are advised to avoid flood-prone parts of properties, including basements and garages, and to stay on higher floors if a home is flooded.
The main electricity switch should be turned off if water enters a property. Drivers are advised to slow down, leave a safe gap to other vehicles and use main routes.
