Mallorca hits 41.9°C in hottest August since 1961

Mallorca reached 41.9°C in Pollença during the Balearics’ hottest August since 1961. The islands averaged 28.3°C across the month, the State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, said on 2 September. Temperatures stood above normal on Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera.

Pollença recorded the highest reading in the archipelago. The top temperatures elsewhere were 37.9°C in Cala Galdana on Menorca, 39.2°C in Sant Joan de Labritja on Ibiza and 35.3°C on Formentera. Monthly average-temperature records also fell in places including Palma, Muro, Sineu, Capdepera, Ciutadella, Es Mercadal and Sant Antoni de Portmany.

Nights stayed hot across the islands

Many places did not drop below 20°C on any night in August. These are known as tropical nights; torrid nights are those when the minimum remains above 25°C.

Palma, Sóller and Capdepera on Mallorca, along with Ciutadella on Menorca and Pollença, had torrid nights for more than half the month. Mallorca’s highest night-time minimum was 28.2°C, recorded in both Banyalbufar and Capdepera. Ciutadella reached 27.2°C, Ibiza Town 26.8°C and Formentera 27.4°C.

Rainfall falls well short

August brought an average of just 9.6 litres per square metre across the Balearics, 55% below normal. Mallorca received 8.8 litres per square metre, down 58%, with the most rain falling in Porreres and Manacor.

Rainfall was 62% below normal on Menorca, where the island airport received the most. Ibiza was 70% down, with Sant Antoni de Portmany receiving the highest total, while Formentera was 25% below normal. Winds were generally normal, although Menorca Airport recorded the month’s strongest gust at 121 kilometres per hour.
