Balearics red alert: public staff told to work at home
Across the Balearic Islands, Monday’s red weather alert changes the working day: regional government staff who have remote access and can do their jobs from home must not go to their workplace. The alert is expected because of severe weather linked to the storm system Adam.
The Balearic Directorate-General for the Civil Service has set the rules to protect staff while keeping essential services running, the Ministry of Labour, Civil Service and Social Dialogue says. Staff who cannot work remotely must follow their line manager’s instructions.
Working from home also takes priority for staff employed under contracts. If that is not possible, they may apply for paid leave under Spain’s Workers’ Statute in certain circumstances. These include being unable to reach work because of official travel advice, restrictions or bans, or facing a risk from severe weather.
Essential services will continue. Staff may be called in for emergencies, incidents or urgent needs if they can travel safely. While the alerts remain in force, the ministry is urging workplaces across the Balearic Islands to take extra care over staff safety both at work and on the journey there.
