Mallorca red rain alert shuts schools on Monday
Schools on Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, close on Monday as more heavy rain approaches and the ground remains saturated after Sunday’s downpours. The Balearic government has cancelled classes on Mallorca, Eivissa and Formentera, where the rain and thunderstorm alert is now red. Disruption to infrastructure on Sunday also played a part in the decision. Menorca is under a yellow alert.
Another front approaches overnight
Spain’s State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, expects a new weather front from the mainland after midnight. It forecasts up to 90 litres per square metre in one hour on Mallorca, and up to 140 litres per square metre over 12 hours. Eivissa and Formentera could receive up to 50 litres per square metre in an hour and 160 over 12 hours.
People on Mallorca have received an ES-Alert message about the red civil protection alert and the school closures. Emergency services are watching conditions closely through the night and into Monday morning.
Day centres close and Palma shuts parks
Day centres and occupational centres for people with care needs or disabilities will also close on Monday across Mallorca, Eivissa and Formentera. In Palma, Mallorca, the city’s emergency plan calls for parks and public spaces to close and activities to be cancelled. Those measures took effect at 18.00 on Sunday.
The Balearic Islands’ Directorate General for Emergencies and Interior urges people to avoid unnecessary journeys and not to cross flooded areas or watercourses, on foot or by vehicle. It says anyone facing an emergency should call 112.
