337,917 regularised people join Spanish Social Security

Spain says 337,917 regularised foreign nationals were registered with Social Security by 31 August. The government released the figure in Madrid on 2 September.

About 40,000 people have visited employment offices since the process began. Labour Secretary Joaquín Pérez Rey said the process remains open and a full assessment must wait until it ends.

Many visits to employment offices may simply involve paperwork before a job contract is signed, Pérez Rey said. Regularisation gives people access to public employment services, while employers can formalise contracts once they are registered as jobseekers.

Most of those who went to employment offices are recorded as having had no previous job, he added.

Social Security and Pensions Secretary Borja Suárez said about 80% of the 337,917 people registered with Social Security were in the General Regime. He also said the government would wait for the process to finish before judging its full effect.
