Mallorca rent caps: Parliament takes up new bill
Mallorca’s towns of Inca and Manacor have tried and failed to gain a designation that could allow rent caps: on Tuesday, 6 October, the Balearic Parliament in Palma debates a Socialist bill to let councils use those rules. The sitting starts at 09.00, with housing also dominating questions to the government.
Why the towns want rent caps
Inca and Manacor sought to be classed as areas with strained housing markets, but neither succeeded. The Balearic Socialist Party (PSIB) wants councils to be able to use the rules for those areas. The People’s Party (PP) and Vox have opposed rent caps, arguing that they do not work.
Socialist parliamentary spokesman Iago Negueruela says many evictions follow rent increases. Left-wing parties also plan to raise the cost of renting and short-term lets during the sitting.
Housing questions for the government
Housing minister José Luis Mateo faces four questions from opposition parties on housing. Balearic president Marga Prohens is also due to answer questions on the housing crisis from the PSIB and Més per Menorca.
The rent-cap proposal still faces a vote. MPs will also consider a bill backed by all parliamentary groups to allow spouses to pass on a legally protected share of an inheritance while still alive. That right is currently limited to parents and children.
