Balearic rental aid: PSIB warns 2,500 families at risk
The PSIB has warned that about 2,500 families could miss out on 2025 rental aid in the Balearic Islands because the budget for the still-open scheme may be insufficient. Speaking in Palma, Mallorca, on Monday, Socialist deputy Llorenç Pou called on the Balearic Islands Department of Housing, Territory and Mobility to set funding at no less than €8 million.
Pou said the allocation should be enough to cover every application that meets the conditions. He also called for a further €15 million increase for the 2026 scheme, arguing that the number of applicants is expected to rise when the maximum eligible rent reaches €1,200 a month.
Earlier funding shortfall
The party said that more than 2,100 families who met the requirements did not receive rental support in 2024 because funds ran out. That accounted for 35 per cent of applications, according to figures attributed by the PSIB to the Balearic Islands Government.
PSIB said the same problem could recur in the 2025 call, with the number excluded by a lack of funding potentially rising to around 2,500. It criticised the regional government for not increasing its own contribution from the previous term despite sharply rising rents.
Dispute over responsibility for funding
Rental-aid calls are the sole responsibility of the Balearic Islands Government, although part of the funding comes from Spain's central government, the PSIB said.
The party said central-government contributions had increased while the regional administration had added no extra money to its own fund. It argued that the 2025 budget should have been raised from the outset because the shortfall had already occurred in 2024.
