Mallorca: 8 Felanitx rental homes favour over-65s

Eight public rental homes are planned for the former hospice in Felanitx, Mallorca. Applicants aged over 65 who can show they have lived in the town for at least 10 years will take priority. Balearic President Marga Prohens laid the first stone on Thursday.

The scheme is the first rental housing development launched by the Balearic Housing Institute, Ibavi, in Felanitx, and its first such project there in almost three decades. Prohens said public housing policies must help people facing severe difficulty finding a home who want to remain in the town where they have built their lives.

Partial demolition comes first

Work will begin with partial demolition and structural reinforcement of the old building. That phase has a budget of 88,000 euros and is due to take half a year.

The eight homes will occupy the first and second floors of the former hospice at Calle Sant Alfons 3. The full housing project is budgeted at 1.3 million euros.

Homes include shared facilities

Each flat will have a double bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living room. The former communal areas will also be refurbished to provide a laundry, kitchen, dining room and lounge.

Felanitx Town Hall will continue to manage the rest of the building for other uses. The project forms part of the Illes en Transformació infrastructure plan and is among more than 1,500 public homes planned by Ibavi.
