Sencelles gets 10 public rental homes for young people

Work has begun on 10 public rental homes in Sencelles, Mallorca. The homes will go preferentially to people under 35 who have been registered as residents of the municipality for more than 10 years. The Balearic Housing Institute, Ibavi, is building its first scheme in Sencelles for 30 years — and its first there for rent.

Housing minister José Luis Mateo, Sencelles mayor Joan Carles Verd and Ibavi manager Roberto María Cayuela marked the start of the project on Calle Molins.

Homes, bedrooms and parking

The building will have a basement, ground floor and first floor. It will contain six two-bedroom homes and four one-bedroom homes, with one adapted for people with disabilities.

Five homes will sit on each residential floor. All will have windows facing two directions, with layouts designed to make use of natural light and ventilation. The basement will provide 10 parking spaces, including one adapted space.

A year and a half of building work

The construction is expected to take a year and a half and has a budget of about €2.1 million before tax. Sencelles council bought the plot in 2017 and transferred it to Ibavi under an agreement signed in June 2024.

The scheme forms part of the Balearic Government’s Islas en transformación infrastructure plan and receives European Union co-funding through the Balearic Feder Programme 2021–2027. Across the Balearics, Ibavi is pushing forward more than 1,500 public homes in new projects; applicants generally need at least five years’ residence on the islands, while people living in the relevant municipality receive priority.
