Mallorca retirement: 4 kilometres a day, money to manage
At least four kilometres a day and a close eye on money: experts offer retirement advice at a meeting in Palma, Mallorca, on Thursday, 15 October. At the Generación+ event at CaixaForum, writer Natalia de Santiago focuses on finances, while physiology professor José Viña sets out ways to stay healthy.
Keep moving and keep planning
Viña recommends walking at least four kilometres a day at a good pace, alongside strength exercises such as lifting weights. He also advises coordination exercises to help prevent falls. Older people need more protein than younger people, he says, and good sleep habits matter at every age.
De Santiago rates financial knowledge in Spain at just three out of ten, pointing to a lack of education about money early in life. She urges people to keep managing their assets in retirement to protect them from inflation and preserve their options in later years. Starting early helps, she says, but it is never too late. CaixaBank says more than 30 per cent of the population will be over 65 in 2050.
Three people recognised in Palma
CaixaBank also presents its Generación+ awards for the first time this year. Gabriel Barceló, co-founder of the Barceló Group, receives an award for his career. Lino Salas is recognised for his long-standing work with Teléfono de la Esperanza in the Balearic Islands. Doctor Joaquín Torrebella receives an award for his work in healthcare and his years with the Red Cross.
