Rissagues cancel Sant Antoni concert on Ibiza

Rissagues recorded on Monday in Sant Antoni de Portmany, Ibiza, prompted the town council to cancel that evening’s Guarrománticos concert for the Sant Bartomeu celebrations. Seawater reached the beach area at s’Arenal and wet some of the material already installed for the performance.

The Spanish State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) also recorded the sudden sea-level oscillations in Ciutadella, Menorca, Formentera and Andratx, Mallorca.

Sea-level changes recorded across the islands

The largest variation was measured in Ciutadella, where the sea level changed by 144 centimetres. Oscillations at the ports of Sant Antoni, La Savina on Formentera and Andratx ranged from 50 to 90 centimetres.

Aemet has kept an orange rissaga warning in force across Menorca, where it forecasts sea-level changes of up to 120 centimetres.

Sant Bartomeu events remain scheduled

Sant Antoni de Portmany Council said the concert was called off as a precaution because part of the installed material had become wet. Traditional events due to begin at 20:00 will go ahead.

A fireworks display planned for midnight over Sant Antoni Bay is also still scheduled to close the festival day.
