RIU invests €5.13m in children and nature projects

RIU says it invested €5.13 million in social, health and environmental projects during 2025, 62% more than a year earlier. The Balearic hotel chain published the figures on 2 September. Its health and education programmes directly reached 69,244 children and teenagers.

The spending covered 119 projects across 78% of RIU’s destinations worldwide. More than half of its social funding — 56% — went to protecting children, under the company’s Proudly Committed strategy.

Nearly €1 million was also set aside as emergency aid to reduce damage caused by Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica, where RIU runs seven hotels.

Environmental work steps up

RIU says all but two of its hotels now hold Ecostars environmental certification. The two recently opened properties have not yet built up the required 12-month operating record. The chain reached its certification target a year ahead of schedule.

Renewable sources provide 90% of the electricity used at its properties, RIU said. Its environmental initiatives rose by 40% during 2025, with 28 biodiversity projects making up 23% of all its actions.

Those projects included the release of 106,805 sea turtle hatchlings in Cabo Verde and Costa Rica. RIU also installed or transplanted 12,642 coral colonies in the Maldives, Mauritius, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Spain.

Chain passes 100-hotel mark

RIU ended 2025 with gross revenue of €4.188 billion, up 2.6%, and passed 100 hotels for the first time. It now has 101 hotels in 22 countries, with 54,412 rooms and 106,795 beds.

The group hosted 6.8 million guests last year and recorded average occupancy of 88%. Its Riu Plaza Toronto also marked RIU’s entry into Canada. At the end of 2025, the company employed 38,950 people.
