In Calvià, Mallorca, Alfonso Rodríguez plans to leave his job as the Spanish government’s representative in the Balearic Islands to campaign for mayor. He announced the move on X on Tuesday afternoon, 13 October. The PSOE candidate wants to win back the mayor’s office at the May 2027 local elections.

Rodríguez was mayor of Calvià in the previous term and took on the candidacy in July. After three years as the government’s representative, he says both jobs demand his full attention. He has asked to step down soon so he can concentrate on the election.

His campaign priorities include access to housing, care for workers and listening to the needs of Calvià’s different areas. Rodríguez has not said when he will leave his government post.
