In Palma, Mallorca, the People’s Party (PP) attacks Alfonso Rodríguez’s resignation 46 days before the general election: it says the Spanish government’s representative in the Balearic Islands is leaving without taking responsibility for his record. Rodríguez announced his resignation on Tuesday afternoon. Speaking on Wednesday, PP parliamentary leader Sebastià Sagreras said his party had repeatedly called for him to go.

Sagreras questioned the timing. He said Rodríguez had pointed to a personal reason or plans to stand in the municipal elections in Calvià, Mallorca, but those elections are not due until May 2027. Sagreras also asked whether Rosario Sánchez, the secretary of state for tourism, would leave her post to lead the PSIB’s list in the regional elections scheduled for the same month.

Sagreras speculated, without offering evidence, that MÉS might have demanded Rodríguez’s departure during talks with the PSIB over joint Senate candidates. He also accused Rodríguez of failing to address a shortage of state security officers, growing insecurity and a migration route from Algeria. The source provides no evidence to establish those claims.
