36 Sahrawi children leave Palma after two months

Drums and Sahrawi music marked the farewell for 36 Sahrawi children in Palma on Friday. After nearly two months with host families in the Balearic Islands, they are due to begin their return journey to the Sahrawi refugee camps in Tindouf, Algeria, on Monday, 31 August.

The gathering began at 19.00 on Plaça de Cort with Tambors per la Pau, followed by Sahrawi music. The Association of Friends of the Sahrawi People of the Balearic Islands organised the annual event, which combines celebration with a call for political recognition.

Their stay offered the children time away from the harsh conditions in the Tindouf camps. It was also intended to draw attention to the Sahrawi people’s situation and their right to self-determination.

The association thanked the host families for their support and said it hoped many more would join the programme next year. On Monday, the children will travel from their respective islands to Barcelona, where they will join children from other autonomous communities before taking a direct charter flight to Tindouf.
