Mallorca mayor steps down after 20 years in Costitx

Costitx mayor Antoni Salas is stepping down after 20 years in office. The Mallorca municipality will hold an extraordinary council meeting at 19.00 on Friday to ratify his resignation. First deputy mayor Joan Munar is due to take over once it takes effect.

Salas has already filed his resignation and will explain his reasons at the meeting. He said he had held the post for many years and that younger people should be given room to step forward.

He will also give up his seat on Costitx council. Salas, who represents El PI on the Consell de Mallorca, said he wants to focus on the coming election campaign.

Munar is currently the councillor responsible for tourism, commerce and the environment, as well as first deputy mayor. Salas said his intended successor was highly prepared and qualified to lead Costitx town hall.
