Nearly 900 join Palma’s Santa Catalina Tomás parade
In Palma, Mallorca, nearly 900 people from 18 municipalities join Saturday’s parade for Santa Catalina Tomás. More than 30 groups take part in the traditional triumphal carriage procession, known as the cabalgata del Carro Triunfal, according to the Mallorca Island Council.
The parade sets off from Plaça de l’Hospital, passes along La Rambla and Avinguda de Jaume III, and ends at Plaça de Santa Magdalena. There, participants lay flowers and venerate the saint’s body.
Emma Martínez González takes the role of the Beata this year, accompanied by her “little angels” and “little peasants”. Palma’s giant figures also join the procession. The Coral de Sant Jaume sings “Sor Tomasseta” with onlookers, while “La Balanguera” is sung at the close. Palma’s municipal band finishes the parade.
The Mallorca Island Council organises the celebration with the Bishopric of Mallorca and the community of canons at Santa Magdalena, with support from Palma City Council and the Teatre Principal de Palma. This year’s procession follows the council’s decision to grant intangible cultural heritage protection to the Santa Catalina Tomás parades in Palma, Valldemossa and Santa Margalida.
