Mallorca school aides bang pots over proposed cuts
Mallorca: Around 40 people bang pots at the Plaça de l'Olivar in Palma, Mallorca, on Thursday afternoon as school aides protest cuts they say the administration wants to impose during talks. The aides, known in Spanish as auxiliares técnicas educativas (ATE), say the cuts would worsen working conditions they already consider chronically precarious. Spokeswoman María Ángeles Cabañero gave the turnout figure to the Europa Press news agency.
The group says the administration has accepted only three of its six longstanding demands: a new job classification, assignment to a centre and a hazard allowance. It says the other three remain blocked: twelve-month contracts, permanent posts and shorter working hours for staff over 55 or 60.
The aides say those unresolved demands affect job security and the quality of support for pupils with special needs. They call talks covering only half their demands unacceptable, saying temporary work and precarious conditions would remain.
