School books for the new term qualify for a 100% tax deduction for people whose tax residence is in Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands. The Ministry of Finance technicians’ body GESTHA set out the rules on 1 September. The amount a taxpayer can claim still depends on the region’s spending caps and income limits.

The Balearic Islands also allow a 15% deduction on after-school language classes. The rules on education costs differ between Spain’s autonomous communities and can cover items including school materials, uniforms, after-school activities, nurseries and academies.

There is also a national maternity deduction for children up to the age of three. Spending on childcare at authorised nurseries or early-years education centres can increase it by up to 1,000 euros.
