Palma school costs pass €429 as SOS backs families

Families in Foners, Palma, are receiving textbooks, school supplies, clothes, shoes and hygiene products as the new school year begins. The help comes through Aldeas Infantiles SOS’s only day centre in the Balearic Islands. The charity says textbooks and uniforms cost more than €429 per pupil on average, calling it a “new spending record”.

Help from the Foners day centre

The Palma centre is one of 30 run by Aldeas Infantiles SOS across ten autonomous communities. Across Spain, the organisation has supported 4,685 children and 1,807 families referred by Social Services ahead of the new school year.

Its centres also provide food, financial help and meal services, while giving priority to mental health support.

Support for children and families

In the afternoons, teams working in education, social work, psychology and teaching provide study support. With volunteers and in coordination with schools and Social Services, they also help children access digital devices and arrange workshops or cultural outings.

Morning sessions focus on families, with training in job hunting, digital literacy and parenting skills.
