Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, has 11 schools putting sea protection into lessons: pupils investigate the marine environment and work on community projects to help conserve it. The Balearic Islands Ministry of Education and Universities announced the programme on Thursday, 22 October 2026.

Called Aprendizaje-Servicio (ApS) Mare Nostrum, the programme links classroom learning with work for the community. The ministry says it wants pupils to understand the sea close to home and think critically about its future. The selected schools include CEIP Sa Marina de Llucmajor, IES Santanyí and IES Marratxí.

Teachers will receive training, while schools will host science workshops. Secondary pupils will also have activities linked to the sea economy. Schools may be able to take pupils out to sea, guided by scientific and technical staff from the Balearic Oceanographic Centre.
