Ibiza Senate win puts Formentera pact in play

Ibiza, in Spain’s Balearic Islands, gives the left a model for the 29 November election: a joint list won a Senate seat there in 2023, and the parties are considering a similar deal for Formentera. The Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) is weighing a wider left-wing list for the Senate, Spain’s upper house. It is due to meet parties from Frente Amplio on Sunday to discuss the idea.

Formentera will elect its own senator for the first time at this election. A joint list there could build on the Ibiza result, but no deal has been struck.

The stakes go beyond the islands. The conservative People’s Party (PP) holds an absolute majority in the Senate, while a civil society campaign wants joint left-wing lists in as many constituencies as possible. The PSOE says it is examining “all alternatives and scenarios” for both houses of parliament.

The parties have until 16 October to register an election coalition. Izquierda Unida is willing to explore an agreement, but some in Compromís doubt one with the PSOE will materialise. Frente Amplio has yet to choose a candidate or settle its alliances.
