Palma, Mallorca: small shops with eligible projects could miss out on council grants if the money runs short. Palma’s branch of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) is calling for a bigger grant budget and clearer rules for city sponsorship. In a statement on Friday, 16 October, it says it will take the proposals to Palma City Council’s next full meeting.

The party says the council can sponsor events, but those deals should not replace regular grants. PSOE councillor Xisco Ducrós wants mayor Jaime Martínez to change how the city handles both. The party is calling for published rules on city-funded advertising sponsorship, plus an annual plan showing how bids will be assessed.

It also wants more grant money for small shops and restaurants, so more businesses can receive support and qualifying projects do not lose out for lack of funds. Sports clubs and associations, it says, should be able to apply for regular grants and get decisions on their applications.

The party’s final proposal concerns PalmaActiva, the city organisation that runs training programmes. It wants a review of which planned courses went ahead, were cancelled or did not take place.
