Mallorca sick leave aid: self-employed get up to €1,000

Self-employed workers in Mallorca and across the Balearics can now receive up to €1,000 when medical leave stops them working. The new Balearic Government scheme came into force on Thursday, 27 August 2026, and helps cover social security payments during the first months of temporary incapacity.

The payment can cover no more than two monthly contributions. If the medical leave lasts less than two months, the support is calculated for the actual period. Where it lasts two months or longer, the first two contributions can be paid in full, up to the €1,000 limit.

Support before the state exemption begins

From the third month of temporary incapacity, national rules exempt self-employed workers from paying their contributions. The new scheme is aimed at the earlier period, when someone may be unable to work but still has the bills to meet.

The Balearic Ministry of Business, Self-Employment and Energy says the measure protects people who run businesses and create jobs. It says those on medical leave have less ability to earn while their costs continue in the first months.

€600,000 set aside for the scheme

The programme has a total budget of €600,000, split into €300,000 for each of the two planned years. The Government calls it a “shield for the self-employed”.

Nearly 110,000 self-employed people currently work in the Balearics, which leads Spain for both annual and month-on-month growth in the sector. The aid joins the zero contribution scheme for new self-employed workers and existing support for established businesses.
