Balearics pay sick-leave contributions for self-employed

Self-employed workers in the Balearics who take medical leave will have their social security contributions covered for the first two months. The Balearic Government has launched the support, welcomed by the ATA Baleares self-employed association in Palma on 27 August 2026.

Until now, workers had to keep paying contributions during the first 60 days of temporary incapacity, even when their income fell or disappeared. ATA president Lorenzo Amor said the Government would now pay the contribution for the first two months of illness-related leave.

ATA Baleares president Magdalena Comas called the move a sign that the regional government wants to support self-employed workers when they need it most.

The association also welcomed the new Oficina del Autónomo, a service designed to provide information, guidance and advice for self-employed workers and people planning to start a business. According to ATA, it is aimed at more than 100,000 self-employed people across the islands.
