Palma, Mallorca, Spain: The Balearic People’s Party is pinning its hopes on Alberto Núñez Feijóo winning enough votes to form a government in Spain’s 29 November election. Its parliamentary spokesman, Sebastià Sagreras, set out that hope on Monday, 5 October, hours after Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced the snap vote. Sagreras said Congress’s rejection of housing decrees had left no choice but an election.

Sagreras accused Sánchez of letting the Balearic Islands down over government funding, the management of airport operator Aena and the migration crisis. He said a Feijóo government would bring a better period for the islands.

The party has yet to decide who will lead its Balearic list. Sagreras said its governing bodies would make that decision, with party leaders due to meet later on Monday.

He also raised the possibility of a contest among the Balearic Socialists, known as the PSIB. Their leader, Francina Armengol, said in May that she wanted to head the party’s list for Congress and won the backing of her deputy Rosario Sánchez on Monday. Sagreras suggested that Aina Calvo, Spain’s secretary of state for security, might challenge her in a primary. He offered that possibility as evidence of a split in the PSIB; no challenge by Calvo was confirmed.
