Son Llàtzer staffing increase announced in Palma

Hospital Universitari Son Llàtzer and Hospital Joan March in Palma, Mallorca, announced on 21 August that they will expand their workforce with 34 nursing care technicians, 24 nurses and five orderlies.

The Nursing Technicians’ Union welcomed the planned recruitment, but said the hospitals’ emergency department also needs more staff to address persistent overcrowding and heavy care demands.

Union calls for emergency department support

María Bustamante, the union’s representative at the hospitals, said emergency staff had worked for years under near-constant overcapacity, rising activity and a substantial workload.

The union said workforce planning should include targeted measures for the emergency department, which it described as one of the hospital’s most pressured services.

Push for permanent posts

The union had recently raised concerns with hospital management over the lack of staffing growth at both hospitals, while other health centres had announced significant increases, it said.

It said the new appointments should ease workloads in the affected units and improve care for patients. The union will continue to press management and the Balearic Islands Health Service for new permanent posts where they are needed.
