Mallorca’s Son Pardo track reopens after €556,418

A €556,418 rebuild has reopened the competition track at Hipódromo de Son Pardo in Palma, Mallorca, after drainage problems made it vulnerable in rainy spells. The Consell de Mallorca opened the renewed trotting track on Friday, 29 August.

The track had been in place for more than 25 years. While work was under way, scheduled races moved temporarily to Hipódromo de Manacor.

Drainage rebuilt and surface replaced

Workers removed and cleaned old material, renewed the drainage system and laid new base and running layers. The top layer used nearly 500 tonnes of material, mostly silica sand.

Maintenance work also improved the existing drainage around the competition and training tracks. The Consell de Mallorca said the overhaul brings the track in line with the current needs of Mallorca’s trotting sector.

Old gravel stays in use

About 12,000 cubic metres of gravel from the old drainage were screened on site and reused. That cut the amount of aggregate that had to be transported.

The island authority said the approach avoided hundreds of heavy-vehicle journeys and reduced the environmental impact of the works. Pedro Bestard, Mallorca’s councillor for Environment, Rural Affairs and Sports, opened the track alongside Hipódromo de Mallorca Sports Institute president Gaspar Oliver and Balearic Trotting Federation president Juan Antonio Rosselló.
