Son Reus strike ends: UGT pursues legal action

The strike at Palma’s Son Reus Animal Welfare Centre is over, but UGT says its dispute with the city council is now heading into the legal arena. The union called off the stoppage on 31 August after it began on 24 August at the centre run by contractor Athisa. UGT alleges that senior council managers repeatedly carried out work assigned to striking staff.

The union says this amounted to external strike-breaking — filling in for workers taking industrial action — and claims it effectively undermined the protest. Its allegations name Palma’s director general for environment, natural areas and animal welfare, as well as the head of ecology, agriculture and animal welfare.

Union accuses Palma council of inaction

UGT says the city council failed to intervene throughout the dispute. It has accused both political leaders and senior managers of disregarding staff rights and attempting to normalise the practice.

The union says the director general, a police officer on leave while holding the public post, was involved in conduct it considers illegal and an attack on the right to strike. These are allegations made by UGT.

Dispute continues after staff return

UGT has already reported the matter to the labour authority and says it will seek accountability from the political and management figures involved over the alleged breach of strike rights.

The union also says it will now make public further serious irregularities that it had held back while seeking a solution to the employment dispute. Staff are returning to work, UGT says, while the union continues its campaign for the proper delivery of animal protection and welfare services at Son Reus.
