Son Reus strike: Union alleges Palma strikebreaking

Workers at the Son Reus animal shelter in Palma are on an open-ended strike, but volunteers are still taking dogs for walks. On 27 August, UGT Servicios Públicos alleged that managers from Palma City Council’s Environment department were carrying out duties normally done by the striking staff to make this possible. The union calls it strikebreaking.

UGT says the managers’ involvement is a direct intervention in the dispute, describing it as external strikebreaking — when people outside the striking workforce take on its jobs. It also accuses council officials of spreading false claims among staff to pressure them into abandoning their labour demands.

The shelter workforce began its indefinite walkout last Monday, seeking improved conditions and an end to what it describes as serious job insecurity and precarity. UGT says 100% of staff are backing the strike while continuing to provide the required minimum services, despite arguing that those rules restrict their right to strike.

The union says it is pleased the dogs can still go out for walks, but maintains this is happening through a clear breach of strike rights. UGT is waiting to hear from Palma City Council, while contractor Athisa has already sent several demands to the council. The union wants a meeting as soon as possible to settle the dispute through talks.
