Son Reus strike: UGT weighs challenge to minimum staffing

The General Workers’ Union (UGT) is considering a legal challenge to minimum staffing set for a strike at the Son Reus animal shelter in Palma, Mallorca. The walkout is due to begin at 2pm on Monday, with the union arguing that the city’s requirements go too far.

UGT said the arrangements require full staffing in several shifts and areas of work. In its view, this would leave employees carrying out almost their normal duties and substantially limit the effect of the industrial action.

The union’s legal team is examining Palma City Council’s resolution before deciding whether to begin formal challenge proceedings. UGT said it remains willing to hold talks to resolve the dispute.

UGT also called for Athisa to make a financial contribution and for the council to provide technical and legal grounds for amending the existing contract to cover the additional cost. It said a settlement would require commitment from both the local authority and the company.
