Cybercrime in Spain rises 25% as prosecutor warns
Cybercrime in Spain jumps 25% in 2025 compared with the previous year: a single offence can affect thousands of people across different regions, the country’s chief prosecutor warns. Teresa Peramato spoke at DATAfórum Justicia in A Coruña, Spain, on 21 October 2026. She wants prosecutors to take charge of criminal investigations.
The latest report from the Public Prosecutor’s Office says one in five offences in 2025 had a digital element. That does not mean all of them were cybercrimes. Peramato says investigations are harder when they are split between regions. She argues that the Public Prosecutor’s Office can take a broader view of such cases.
She called for technical expertise, cooperation and respect for rights during legal proceedings. Digital tools could help analyse large amounts of information and speed up cases, she said. But she warned that artificial intelligence also raises questions about transparency, data protection and possible bias.
