Spain election: court gives 24 hours on suspended votes
Spain’s 29 November election: a temporary suspension of voting rights means the first election documents sent to voters abroad must carry a warning. In Madrid on Tuesday, 20 October, Spain’s Supreme Court gave the parties involved 24 hours to respond after the Central Electoral Board asked how to put the order into effect. Their deadline ends at 15:00 on 21 October.
The suspension affects people granted citizenship under the so-called “grandchildren law” who cannot show that they descend from exiles. The Central Electoral Board says the Electoral Census Office can prepare and send the first documents to voters registered as living abroad between 24 and 30 October 2026, provided the mailing warns that voting rights could be suspended.
Challenges brought by Iustitia Europa and Vox prompted the temporary suspension. Iustitia Europa now wants the judges to warn that failing to comply with their rulings could lead to electoral offences.
