Spain eye World Cup podium as Torrens backs team

Spain head into their two final World Cup warm-up games without five WNBA players, but captain Alba Torrens says the squad is coming together. Mali are first up in Zaragoza on Saturday, before Spain play their last friendly on Sunday at Pabellón Príncipe Felipe. Torrens spoke after training at the venue on 28 August.

The Spanish side chosen by coach Miguel Méndez has made progress in training and its first preparation matches, according to Torrens. She said the players are working on the small tactical points that can make a difference once the World Cup starts.

Spain have not yet named their final 12-player World Cup squad. Torrens said those already in camp and those still to join share the same aim: building the strongest possible side, whatever their role.

Mali will also face Spain in the World Cup group. Torrens said the friendly offers a useful early look at opponents whose players are known from the Spanish league.

Spain are being talked about as contenders for a podium place, a tag Torrens called encouraging. But she would not promise a result, saying the team must first prepare well enough to compete with the world’s best.

Torrens, the veteran of the group, said she wants to contribute on and off the court. She also thanked Zaragoza supporters for their backing and said Spain will be looking for two wins in their final games before the tournament.
