Mallorca’s schools are shut on Monday, 19 October, as storm Adam disrupts the Balearics. The 112 emergency coordination centre has recorded nearly 130 incidents across the islands since Saturday night. Classes are also cancelled on Ibiza and Formentera, while red emergency alerts remain in force on all three islands.

Trees fall as rain front skirts Mallorca

Between 10pm on Sunday and 6.30am on Monday, 112 recorded 16 incidents: 11 on Ibiza, three on Mallorca and two on Formentera. They included six fallen trees, five cases of flooding in buildings or streets and a road closure.

The rain front expected over Mallorca skirted the island and turned towards Menorca, according to 112 director Eduardo Parga. Spain’s state weather agency recorded 195 litres of rain per square metre in 24 hours at Formentera-Sant Francesc.

Weather agency warnings for rain and storms have dropped to orange and yellow, but emergency alerts remain red on Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera, and orange on Menorca. The Military Emergency Unit has moved to Mallorca and Ibiza to reinforce the response to the storm and flood risk.

Care services and vaccinations cancelled

The Balearic government has suspended several day-care and support services, alongside classes. The Mallorca island council has cancelled activities at its day centres and its home support service. Scheduled patient transport to appointments and rehabilitation is suspended until 10am; flu vaccinations in schools and care homes are also cancelled.

On Sunday, Civil Protection sent phone alerts to Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera. They urged people to avoid travel and outdoor activities, stay away from watercourses, flood-prone areas and basements, and move to an upper floor if at home.
