Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands: the regional government cancels Monday’s classes as storm system Dana Adam brings a risk of flooding. Classes are also cancelled on Eivissa and Formentera. Spain’s State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, has issued an orange warning for thunderstorms and heavy rain across all three islands.

Mallorca could see 50 litres per square metre in an hour. On Eivissa and Formentera, rainfall could reach 160 litres per square metre over 12 hours. Heavy rain had already fallen on Sunday.

Balearic government president Marga Prohens says the decision follows advice from the Directorate-General for Emergencies 112 and a protocol with the Balearic Ministry of Education and Universities. She says the aim is to protect children and avoid journeys that could hamper emergency crews.

Families are being asked to check school messages on Gestib, follow emergency service instructions and watch the government’s official channels for updates.
