Seven votes to six: in Palma, Mallorca, the Balearic Parliament backs a call for emergency help for farms hit by rain and storms across the Balearic Islands. The vote on 8 October 2026 asks the Balearic government to set up the aid; it does not put money in farmers’ hands yet.

What the aid would cover

The proposed help would cover lost animals, damaged buildings and tools, and the cost of clearing debris and cleaning up. PSIB, Vox, MÉS per Mallorca and Més per Menorca voted for the call in the parliament’s Economy Committee. The PP voted against it.

The proposal came from PSIB and was defended by MP Malena Riudavets. It also calls for closer work with island councils, farming groups and cooperatives on advice, training and trials of growing methods suited to changing climate conditions.

Longer-term plans split the committee

All parties backed an assessment of the damage extreme weather caused to professional fruit and vegetable farms in 2026. All except Vox supported a climate adaptation plan for Balearic fruit and vegetable growers, along with measures for farms that choose to move towards organic farming.

Two other proposals failed after the PP and Vox opposed them: a permanent aid scheme to help farms adapt to climate change, and a 10 per cent higher aid rate for organic farms.
