Mallorca storm: 108 incidents as fresh rain looms
Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, has 108 storm incidents as emergency services count 305 across the islands. The 112 emergency coordination centre logged them between 22.00 on Saturday and 18.00 on Monday 19 October; flooded buildings and streets were among the main problems. The Balearic government lowers storm alerts on Monday after a crisis meeting, but more rain is due overnight.
Heavy rain hits Mallorca as alerts ease
The heaviest rain on Mallorca arrived around midday on Monday. Andratx, Mallorca, recorded 53 litres, Porto Pi in Palma recorded 49 litres, and the Raiguer area around 40 litres. Wind gusts were generally around 60 kilometres per hour, briefly reaching 80 or 90 kilometres per hour in some places.
Mallorca’s rain and storm alert drops from red to yellow, while Menorca moves from orange to yellow. Eivissa and Formentera leave red alert but remain on orange. The Inunbal flood emergency plan stays active on Mallorca, though its operational level falls from 2 to 0. It remains at level 2 on Eivissa and Formentera, where recovery work continues after heavy rain.
More rain expected overnight
A new band of rain is expected to reach Eivissa and Formentera overnight before moving towards Mallorca and Menorca. It could bring around 30 litres per hour. The State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, keeps a yellow weather warning for rain and storms across all the Balearic Islands. Even so, educational activities and outdoor sport, social and cultural activities can resume on Tuesday.
Of the 305 incidents, 41 were still open on Monday evening, including 11 on Mallorca. If conditions do not worsen overnight, the Military Emergency Unit will withdraw its contingent from Mallorca. Its personnel will keep working on Eivissa until at least Tuesday. On Formentera, the PM-820 road will close overnight for recovery work, and the nursery school in Sant Ferran will remain closed on Tuesday.
