120-place student hall: Balearic MPs push for action
Palma: Balearic MPs want a planned 120-place student hall for the University of the Balearic Islands built without further delay, so it can open as soon as possible. On Thursday, 22 October, parliament’s Education and Universities Committee partly backed a proposal from Socialist MP Carles Bona urging the regional government to press ahead with construction.
While the hall is being built, MPs want the government, the university and others involved to examine temporary accommodation. They singled out students from Menorca, Eivissa and Formentera, as well as those struggling with housing costs or the cost of travelling to study.
The committee unanimously backed calls for more affordable homes and rooms to rent for students. It also wants the government to review, and if needed increase, help with accommodation costs for students who leave their island or home municipality to study.
But MPs rejected a study of how much student housing is needed. It would have projected demand over five and ten years and checked whether the planned 120 places would be enough. PP and Vox voted against it, seven votes to the six cast in favour by PSIB, MÉS per Mallorca and the Mixed Group.
