Mallorca teachers could get aid for island moves
Teachers in Mallorca and across the Balearics who must move to another island for a job could receive financial help under a new proposal. Education minister Antoni Vera unveiled the plan in Palma on 3 September. The aim is to stop teachers turning down posts in their first years because the destination is too expensive.
The Balearic Islands Education and Universities Ministry says travel and relocation between islands cost more. The proposed payments will be discussed in negotiations on the education framework agreement for 2027 to 2031, with the details yet to be agreed.
Experienced teachers who guide newly appointed colleagues could also receive recognition for their mentoring work. The talks will additionally cover a timetable for repaying extra payments in full, as well as housing problems faced by teachers in Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera.
School meals and vacant posts
Every public primary school is due to have a school meal service for the 2026/2027 academic year, which starts on 10 September. Vera said the service is important for balancing work and family life and for supporting vulnerable pupils.
The minister said 35 school meal services have opened during the current term of government, including at schools that had none before and some serving particularly vulnerable pupils.
An urgent process was launched to fill 85 teaching posts still vacant. A further process is due to open on Friday for absences arising in the first days of September. Vera said most posts have now been filled, though some remain open in Ibiza and Menorca.
Building work and the next agreement
Vera also pointed to planned education projects: an extension at IES Sant Marçal, IES Ses Estacions, the vocational training centre in Ciutadella, IES Marc Ferrer in Formentera and a gym at CEIP Can Misses in Ibiza.
The negotiating timetable for the 2027-2031 agreement is expected by the end of the year. Vera said more than 90 per cent of the previous agreement had been put in place, although some commitments remain outstanding.
