TEI posts: STEI criticises appointment process

The STEI union has accused the Ministry of Education and Universities of failing to plan appointments for early-years education technicians, known as TEI, and described the situation as an irreversible disaster. In a statement issued in Palma, Mallorca, on 25 August, the union said that only 20 of 49 posts expected to be advertised by late July for the full school year had been allocated by Tuesday.

Concerns over nine-month contracts

STEI said 16 of the 20 allocated posts had been filled through appointments made on grounds of production circumstances, a contractual arrangement it said harms both children and staff. The other four appointments were for vacant posts.

The contracts are due to last nine months, meaning classrooms would be left without specialists from 1 June, according to the union.

Call for interim appointments

The union said TEI staff had long been waiting for posts with stable working conditions and that around 33 positions for the full school year remained unallocated, according to the data it had reviewed.

STEI also criticised the ministry for citing computer problems in third-party statements, saying the posts had been created and funded months earlier. It called for appointments to be made on an interim basis rather than as vacant posts to ensure pupils receive support throughout the school year.
