Palma car seized over temporary plates

A car has been towed to Palma’s Sa Riera depot after officers found it carrying temporary number plates assigned to a different make and model.

Palma Local Police stopped the 32-year-old Spanish mechanic at about 17.00 on 28 August during a preventive check on Camí de Son Hugo. His vehicle papers initially appeared to be in order, but a check with the Directorate-General for Traffic showed that the plates belonged to a different car.

The temporary plates also had an expired circulation permit and no compulsory third-party insurance, police said. The driver told officers he worked at a garage, owned the plates and had fitted them himself after receiving them with paperwork from a gestoría, a vehicle paperwork agency.

The documents he later produced listed a completely different registration number. That number, police said, matched the chassis number of the car he was driving.

Officers seized the plates and sent the car by municipal tow truck to the Sa Riera depot. The mechanic is under investigation, without arrest, on suspicion of forging a public document, while police have also issued administrative complaints and passed the case to the judicial authority.
