TetraIB station strengthens emergency radio coverage in Ibiza
The Balearic Government brought a new TetraIB station into service in Es Cubells, in the municipality of Sant Josep, Ibiza, on 24 August. The installation is intended to strengthen security and emergency-service communications in an area where terrain makes radio coverage difficult.
The site improves coverage across a landscape of changes in elevation, woodland, minor roads and scattered homes, as well as steep coastal slopes and cliffs. Sant Josep Local Police, which uses the TetraIB network, is expected to benefit from more reliable links and closer coordination with other emergency responders.
Expansion of the Ibiza network
The Es Cubells installation forms part of a wider programme to expand and modernise TetraIB on Ibiza. The number of operational stations on the island has risen from seven to 14.
Miquel Cardona, director general of IBDigital, said each new site is planned to address a specific coverage gap. Mountains, uneven ground and natural obstacles have a major effect on radio signals across Ibiza, he said.
Shared communications for emergency services
TetraIB is the Balearic Government's public radio communications network for security and emergencies. It provides a common system for local police, firefighters, civil protection teams, emergency services and other bodies working together during incidents including natural disasters, forest fires and large gatherings.
The expansion is part of a €13 million investment programme, co-financed by European Feder funds, to upgrade critical communications across the Balearic Islands. Ibiza also has a transportable telecommunications station that can be moved to areas requiring temporary reinforcement of communications.
